So far, I have been unable to find a photograph of the signing of the Virginia City Treaty of September 24, 1868. So the next best thing was to commission a painting of the event by Willie Preacher, a Shoshone-Bannock artist living in Blackfoot, Idaho. Willie and I visited the site of the signing in Laurin, Montana, about ten miles west of Virginia City, and I provided him with historic photos and documents that helped him envision the setting as it might have appeared on that date.

The unveiling of his painting took place in July of 2013 on the footsteps of the Madison County Courthouse in Virginia City. A number of people were on hand to get a glimpse of Preacher’s newest painting.
